What is hill skills & mountain courses?

Hill Skills and Mountain Courses are group or solo activities which encourage people of all ages, fitness levels, and backgrounds to learn basic mountaineering skills and knowledge to better enhance their walking experiences.

You’ll learn things like basic map reading, compass skills, weather conditions and what this means for your hikes, danger warnings, survival skills and much more. 

You can choose to follow a structured course which allows you travel up the ranks from bronze to gold and gain qualifications or to do a more laid back and adventurous approach which simply teaches you these skills along the way of your chosen hike destination.

Our Mountain Skill Courses

Basic Navigation

This class will teach you the basics of navigating, including map reading and compass use. You'll leave with all these new skills that can be put to good use on future walks as well!

Aimed for beginners who enjoy walking but want to feel more confident at navigation.

Next Step Navigation

Following on from the 'Basic Navigation' mountaineering course. In this course, you will learn the basic route planning tactics and map reading skills. You'll also cover more in-depth scenarios such as bad weather or emergency situations.
You won't need to complete 'Basic Navigation' first, if you feel like you already have some knowledge, start here.

Night Navigation

A course for those who already know how to navigate day-to-day, but may not be experienced in night navigation. The three topics covered are: emergency procedures and planning routes when visibility is poor, as well as traveling during the night.

Hill Skills Accredited Course

While many people who walk in the countryside and moorlands have started by picking up a map at their local library and taking an exploratory hike, this syllabus is designed to help you get started with your outdoor adventures. Topics covered include route assessment, weather knowledge and more.

What Will The Mountain Leader Do?

The mountain leader is in charge of your group or solo hike, walk or course. Our expert professionals will set tasks, challenges and group activities in order to test your knowledge and physical abilities. 

The mountain leader will take into consideration your experience level and knowledge and carefully plan out the best routes for you. 

Ultimately the role of mountain leader is to manage the group effectively by setting goals and targets that the group can work towards, whilst still providing educational training and expertise throughout. 

The Mountain leader will also undergo risk assessments and strategic planning to ensure all participants are safe and travelling in the right conditions with the correct equipment.
